Thank you for keeping the flame of real things alive, Terri and Katherine. I grew up in the '50s, on the cusp of Disney. Watching his TV show was like overdosing on candy. But I was fortunate to also discover a few shining threads from the deep, rich past in the children's magazine Jack and Jill, which I had a subscription to. At that time, it was full of fine stories and minimal fluff. A series of Baba Yaga tales touched me in a way I could not fathom, and I read them countless times. I knew she was a mystery from somewhere that my everyday American life was not connected to. Decades later I return to her as a primal source.Ramona Gaulthttp://thedryline-anovel.blogspot.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-79334018082275086922011-06-14T08:43:16.643-07:002011-06-14T08:43:16.643-07:00Such a wonderful, interesting, and poignant post. ...Such a wonderful, interesting, and poignant post. I've developed a 'nose' for snippets of stories that pre- or post-date c.1850 - before that, they resonate with the beliefs of centuries of people. After that... well, let's say they're well on the way to Disney. Plenty of terrifying other-worldly beings have been turned into 'grey ladies' mourning for lost loves!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-62145306184628478752011-06-12T01:57:16.195-07:002011-06-12T01:57:16.195-07:00Oh yes. Stories are important for all sorts of reasons, but they're VITAL for unhappy children.
Stories can convey the idea of a happy normality (though these sorts of books are sadly, SADLY unfashionable at the moment) and, just as importantly, of an infinite possibility.
I really believe this glimpse of freedom really can change lives.Sally Pruehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15999389456442530903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-53859940003186638492011-06-11T17:18:43.213-07:002011-06-11T17:18:43.213-07:00Katherine, thanks for your story about meeting Ter...Katherine, thanks for your story about meeting Terri. I met Terri through the Endicott studio, which I found via SurLaLune, and then I met you through Terri's blog. My life has been enriched indeed through these virtual meetings.

Thank you for sharing more of your story, Terri. Like you I had a perilous childhood. I fled as a teen, and I have been estranged from most of my family of origin for all of my adult life. Like you I sought a way out through a mystic portal. At the time I chose the mysteries of science and the abstractions of mathematics. In the past few years I have returned to my first love, which really, when I boil it down to its essence, is the fairy tale. Your writing and art has been a huge influence on me as I return to my spiritual/emotional roots. I hope you won't ever regret sharing these personal details. The healing power of your own tale is something you will never be able to measure. You have provided a few golden keys yourself.Cathrinhttp://www.cathrinhagey.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-78250996836427545742011-06-11T16:08:14.400-07:002011-06-11T16:08:14.400-07:00I really enjoyed reading this, a fantastic thought...I really enjoyed reading this, a fantastic thought provoking post. Though you only have to look at the Mabinogion for horror! Also very interesting to read that you yourself found in such stories therapeutic parallels - that's often advanced as a theory, but I haven't known anyone to confirm it from personal experience before.
