I read once that the legend of the Pied Piper originated in the emigration of some Germans to Romania in the Middle Ages, where they founded the Seven Towns, the Siebenburgen, one of which is Sighisoara, a fascinating place - one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe. Perhaps I just thought about it but didn't do it. Anyway - I was very glad to be reminded of this strange and sinister story.
