They're now stiffened with parcel-strapping, apparently.

Must say, though, Lily, there was a point, later, where I began to appreciate the Princes' very very short tunics...Sally Pruehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15999389456442530903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-6111253245874813182011-08-03T21:02:56.466-07:002011-08-03T21:02:56.466-07:00A very funny and enlightening read! Oddly enough I never really cared about what the prince was wearing... I've noticed this is the sina qua non for my young daughter and her friends, and likely was for me once, too.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-62460609450945808802011-07-31T03:10:10.424-07:002011-07-31T03:10:10.424-07:00Thanks very much indeed, Susan - praise from Sir H...Thanks very much indeed, Susan - praise from Sir Hubert...Sally Pruehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15999389456442530903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-75636695405370061342011-07-29T13:33:13.234-07:002011-07-29T13:33:13.234-07:00I loved COLD TOM, and I loved this post too!I loved COLD TOM, and I loved this post too!Susan Pricehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07738737493756183909noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-19010366010803944112011-07-29T11:43:15.461-07:002011-07-29T11:43:15.461-07:00Thanks very much indeed to Cat, Adele, Leslie, Esm...Thanks very much indeed to Cat, Adele, Leslie, Esmerald, Sue and Strop. I'm really delighted you enjoyed the account of my undistinguished childhood!
Ann, I haven't seen those encyclopaedias since I was a kid, but I do have a more modern version which is I think pretty much the same, except with some of the more blatant racism taken out.
Yes, there are over two hundred stories in the whole set, but they go rapdily down-hill from volume one, and there are no stories at all in volumes nine or ten (boooo!). The later volumes often try sneakily to pass off Golden Deeds as proper stories, too, (huh!) and there are also things like Aesop's Fables in there, which didn't cut the mustard at all as far as I was concerned.
Having said all that, I still keep the whole set entirely for the stories, so at least two and a half cheers for good old Arthur Mee.Sally Pruenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-34412288489028618742011-07-29T10:37:34.474-07:002011-07-29T10:37:34.474-07:00Really enjoyed this - positively impish!Really enjoyed this - positively impish!Sue Purkisshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09084528571944803477noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-35831086613385495692011-07-29T09:39:48.991-07:002011-07-29T09:39:48.991-07:00That's a fab post - I loved it! I blame the solitary Arthur Rackham print for that.

I love the way you describe Sally's writing as coming from the opposite-from-usual angle. Now I'm going to have to buy a copy of Cold Tom!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-14541581054570702622011-07-29T07:36:56.992-07:002011-07-29T07:36:56.992-07:00Thank you, Sally - I loved this. We had just one volume (No.1, or 2, I forget which) and my memory of it is that it was FULL of fairytales, poems and pictures of waif-like girls in floaty dresses and daisies in their long hair (and how I longed to be one of those girls!) That book was where I found wonderful sad stories like The Forsaken Merman, and the one about the man who stumbles by accident into fairyland and when he returns a hundred years have passed and everyone he knew is dead. Have I really forgotten 90% of what was in that book? The saddest story of all is that when I wanted to show it to my own children I found my parents had thrown it away.Ann Turnbullhttp://www.annturnbull.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-90955265960172848082011-07-29T05:42:10.693-07:002011-07-29T05:42:10.693-07:00These books sound great!
