She does a beautiful original song of Vassilisa. I first heard it in an old brick church hall in Sydney. So haunting and wonderful and did full justice to the tale. xxJosephine Tale Peddlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16431330956687490112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-25175019669799861282010-11-02T07:57:51.709-07:002010-11-02T07:57:51.709-07:00Super post, Lucy! Britain is a bit chilly for much skyclad dancing, but I do use the circle to mark the solstices. Tonight I shall be burning what I want to get rid of from the old year (symbolically) and 'planting' the things I want to grow and flourish in the new. I'll welcome those at Imbolc--the first day of the Celtic spring.

Jo--glad you are a Baba Yaga fan too--'deliciously scary' is absolutely perfect and apt!Lucy Coatshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16774389681477698245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-91701944471615662162010-10-30T15:33:41.299-07:002010-10-30T15:33:41.299-07:00One of my favorite writerly people, Lucy! introduc...One of my favorite writerly people, Lucy! introduced by another,Kath!, and my very favorite fairytale.
I think I came across Baba Yaga in an children's antholpogy called The Witches. Don't remember much about it except that it had an orange cover and the two stories I liked the best were Baba Yaga and an excerpt of Bedknobs and Broomsticks, because they were both 'real' witches. I know Angela Lansbury's movie version took the bite out of the story witch (Miss ???) but I remember her as not being particularly nice and also not very fond of children.
I agree that Baba Yaga is the witch of all witches and absolutely terrifying in that deliciously creepy way.The iron teeth! The chicken-legged shack. I'd forgotten that she traveled in a mortar with a pestle. Imagine that sound behind you as you ran! Nice how you compare it all to the vagaries of writing.Jo Treggiarihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02417288480274268189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-86775199372644772592010-10-30T08:41:23.856-07:002010-10-30T08:41:23.856-07:00You have a stone circle in your garden, Lucy? Or do you sit inside it to dream up books?Katherine Robertshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17196712319655603442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-20483947455237607292010-10-29T06:42:50.177-07:002010-10-29T06:42:50.177-07:00I'm so thrilled to see this up--and very thril...I'm so thrilled to see this up--and very thrilled too with Kath's kind words. The Seven Sacred Trees in my stone circle (if you'd like to know) are: Oak (Duir), Birch (Beith) , Rowan (Luis), Alder (Fearn), Apple (Quert), Hazel (Coll) and Willow (Saille). Holly and Blackthorn and Ash could have been there too, but they grow nearby, so I chose the less prickly ones.

Juliet--good to find another CPE fan. I think she should be required reading for all writers who delve into folk and fairytale.

Claire--thank you. The Baba Yaga story is brewing in the mind's cauldron just now, and will emerge when it is ready.Lucy Coatshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16774389681477698245noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-31656524175582498872010-10-29T04:48:56.620-07:002010-10-29T04:48:56.620-07:00Having just broken off from writing a story becaus...Having just broken off from writing a story because I was stuck this was a wonderful post to read!
