Inside a ring of lovely fairy women were dancing. He burst in and seized one of them, and kept her for three days till she finally spoke. She told him her name was Godda, and agreed to become his wife - but on condition he must never reproach her. They lived happily until the day when, returning from hunting, Edric's dinner wasn't ready: and he exclaimed angrily, 'I suppose you have been with your sisters and have forgotten your duty to me.' Upon the angry word, Godda vanished. And since then, Edric rides the hills hunting for her. (Although some say they have been seen riding together at the head of their unearthly troop.)Katherine Langrishhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12529700103932422873noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4950999049789394042.post-44339763760879845842011-07-09T11:49:19.346-07:002011-07-09T11:49:19.346-07:00Sent chills down my spine. I was brought up near Alderley Edge, so I know the Alan Garner/Merlin tale well, but since I've lived in Cumbria I've come across more, eg. King Dunmail, Elva Hill. I wonder if they all stem from one original story lost in the mists of time, or the urge to fill all our mountains with sentient creatures - perhaps going back to a day when the mountains themselves were seen as alive? Who knows...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
